I am planning to use Astro Photography Tool (APT) to collect images from my DSLR, including calibration frames, and use MaxIm DL to do the image processing. The file names generated by APT uses the first letter of the calibration frame ( i.e. F=flat) to designate which type of calibration frame that the image file is. Will the calibration wizard in MaxIm DL recognize the single letter found in the file name as a calibration frame?

MaxIm DL does not look at the file names at all. It uses FITS header information.

If the images do not have appropriate header keywords then you will have to set ip calibration groups manually. Please see the manual for more information.
