When combining many flats to make a master calibration image, is it appropriate to add a pedestal value (Set Calibration/ Advanced) or not, and if so what value.

It has always seemed to me not quite right to add a pedestal value to an image that is used in a multiply/ divide calibration operation (as opposed to in an additive/ subtractive operation with darks and bias)

MaxIm DL handles the pedestal automatically. It is added when the master files are generated and tagged in the FITS header. It is then taken into account automatically when using the calibration masters.

Pedestal is added to all master frames, though for flats it is arguably not necessary. That said, it's simpler and more reliable to apply the exact same process to all images - which is what we do.
