I obviously don't understand how one gets colour into photographs. I'm using an SBIG 8300 STF C and trying to photograph M42. I have an OIII filter screwed into the front of the camera while taking the subs. I understand the debayering concept and have done that in post processing in Pixinsight.
    What am I doing incorrectly?

The OIII filter is narrowband, passing only a very narrow spectrum of greenish-blue light. So taking a colour picture through that is just going to come out green.

Thanks, Doug. Then if I just use the 8300 C as is I'll get the colour? Are H alpha and OIII filters only used with the mono version of my camera?

Usually yes. Some people do narrowband with color cameras but you have to realize that only some of the pixels will see anything.

MaxIm DL has a command to extract individual planes, might be worth a try.
