Bahtinov Focusing Masks

    How well do the Bahtinov focusing masks like the ones the Kendrick sells work for finding the optimum focus point ? I have found that they are simple and quick as long as you have a fairly bright star.

    Sometimes auto-focus routines get confused by the spikes. YMMV.

    Auto-focus routines aren't designed to work with it. It's very effective for manual focusing.

    A friend of mine once wrote a custom auto-focus routine that was intended to work with a Bahtinov mask - and it worked very well. Unfortunately he's since passed away so I can't ask him for more details.
