Hello, I’m Massimo I live in Italy and I married SBIG Camera since ST-7 took personally in Santa Barbara many years ago.
Today I'm in big trouble and not for my fault, I explain it:

I have a STF-8300 with filter wheel and ST-i as guide everything worked well with no problem at all, some days ago I bought the last version of MaximDl 6.29.4 a pre-requisite to work with Maesto as Colin Haig told me.
Once installed the new version some problem arise in connections and under suggestion of Colin I made firmware update to the needed camera .
ST-i has no deeded of any upgrade but 8300 YES

Unfortunately during uprgrading STF-8300 the Drivercheker64 program (I'm under Windows 10) crash itself after few seconds.
After the next restart the camera was not able to connect anymore.
    The end
Probably the firmware containing the USB description has been corrupted. Can you help me to solve this problem.

    Best Regard
    Massimo

P.S. I myself work in electronics and usual to flash rom in microchip micro controller, but never relay to end user the firmware upgrade unless is 100% save or reversible.

When you plug the camera in, does the camera show up in the Device Manager?

Are you able to select a driver for the "unknown device" manually?

    In Device Manager:
    -select "Update Driver"
-select "Browse my computer for drivers"
-select "let me pick from a list"
    -uncheck "show compatible hardware"
    -select "SBIG"
-select "SBIG USB-64 Camera with Firmware".

Hi Tim, Thank you for you answer, I did the procedure on usual PC where SBIG STF-8300 was used.

    In Device Manager:
    -select "Update Driver" OK
-select "Browse my computer for drivers" OK
-select "let me pick from a list" OK
    -uncheck "show compatible hardware" OK
-select "SBIG" Do not see "SBIG" among vendors list.
-select "SBIG USB-64 Camera with Firmware".

ok everything is done as amministrator priviledge :

-unistall and install with Drivercker64 versio 4.o5 buid 0
    - download the latest drivers and installed
    - restart the pc
    same results :-(
    --select "Update Driver" OK
-select "Browse my computer for drivers" OK
-select "let me pick from a list" OK
    -uncheck "show compatible hardware" OK
-select "SBIG" Do not see "SBIG" among vendors list.

SBIG should appear alphabetically as next item in screenshot ?

Can you send a screenshot of the SBIG Driver Checker 64 "Drivers" tab?

    Yes, they should be alphabetical.

Try updating the driver again, but manually point it to the location of the SBIG drivers. They should be located in this folder:

    "C:\Program Files (x86)\SBIG\Driver Checker 64\SBIG Drivers 3r2\64 Bit\Pro"

Try unplugging the USB and power to camera FIRST, then tryito update. Sometimes Windows will keep a file open.

Good morning, manual updating gave me the same error, says "the drivers is update, the descriptor device request failed"
and unplugging USB and power the camera first does not have any effect, thanks Colin.

Just inform you that I did all the same test also with another laptop and another usb cable, but unfortunately nothing has changed.

Is the update firmware function in DriverChecker64 able to kill the camera ?

Can this screenshoot be helpful ? I connected the St-i ( working camera) and the STF-8300, note the different position on Device manager.

If I had to guess, I would say your USB chipset has failed and it will need to come in for service.

If you want to send it in, you can contact Bill Lynch and he can make the arrangements.

My understanding is that this was a firmware update that was interrupted. If that is true, then reprogramming the camera with STXUtils would be the "cure". Can somebody look into doing that with Max?

I can try this sure, though when I have encountered this in the past it is frequently caused by a failing USB chipset, and is likely to reoccur.

Can we arrange a time for me to login via Teamviewer and we can try reprogramming the camera?

It's not a failure in that something broke, it's the "brick" that happens when a firmware update gets interrupted.

If the USB descriptor is not identifiable by Windows in the Device Manager...will STXUtil recognize it?

I don't know. All I know is that when a camera gets bricked due to an interruption of a firmware update, it can be reprogrammed with STXUtils. STXUtils may find the EzUSB but no Gate Array or perhaps an unprogrammed digital board (not in a STF obviously) but it's always been the way to unbrick a camera.
