I took my camera down this weekend and decide to bake the desiccant and when I took the filter wheel apart this is what I found.

The filter wheel is the FW7 STX connects to the stx 16803.

I measured the depth of the corners and there was a difference between in depth from where the corners broke compare to the other corners where the filter did not break.

The depth of the corner that broke was .00771 compare to the none broken corner of .00815.

What do you think? I have never seen this happen before.

The filters are the Baader 50 mm set.

Very odd. I'm assuming the wheel hasn't been shipped... for obvious reasons we recommend against having the filters installed when you do that.

Are you saying the relief holes in the corner aren't as deep on some slots?

It looks like it won't have any impact on imaging. You can just clear out the chips.

After thinking about the filter wheel and how the filters are held in place with a steel plate, this is not the best design.

I think if we can figure out some type of a softer material that can rest on the edge of the filters and than have the retaining plate secure the gasket between the filters and the steel plate.

This may provide enough cushion to stop filters begin broken what do you think.

I'll look into the tolerances on the parts, to see if there's something we can improve on there.

I have the same problem with my filters chipping at the edges. They are Astrodon filters.

I am considering adding electrical tape to the edges to cushion them from the end of cycle "dust shake off". Can this be turned off?.

I image in cold temperatures down to -30C which may not help.

Any other suggestions would be welcome.

There is no “dust shake off”. There is only wheel alignment.

The work around I did was to put a layer of cork on the plate which has stop the breakage of the filters.

The company may want to review how the top plate touches the filters.

    Doug,
I had the same issue occur on a brand new STX 16803 and filterwheel. All filters had chipped corners when I took it apart to send in for a shutter malfunction. What is DL doing about the chipped filter problem as this is a brand new setup?
    Thanks,
    Robert Mueller
