STF 8300colored matrix?

    Anyone knows this question: Does STF8300Colored has less quantum eficiency than STF8300Mono? as RGGB bayer matrix is blocking some photons for each specific color on color camera?

    Hi Mani.

    Yes this is always the case.
    Bayer matrix sensor versions of a particular design are always less efficient than the mono version.

    Peak QE is quoted for a reference wavelength of light and will be different for each element of the Bayer matrix.
    There is not an "overall" QE value quoted for a colour sensor.
    (Not all sensor manufacturers publish QE values).

    Below are the quoted QE values for mono and colour sensor versions of the KAF-8300, with various sensor microlens and cover glass options, as published in the Onsemi public data sheet:

    Peak Quantum Efficiency (Color)
    Microlens, clear glass R (600 nm) 33%
    Microlens, clear glass G (540 nm) 40%
    Microlens, clear glass B (480 nm) 33%
    (Note: Above figures taken from detailed specifications, Table 6, Page 9.
    Table 1, Page 1, General Specifications, has uncorrected document errors re: wavelength)


    Peak Quantum Efficiency (Monochrome)
    Microlens, Clear Glass (540 nm) 54%
    Microlens, No Glass (540 nm) 60%
    Microlens, AR Glass (540 nm) 56%
    No Microlens, Clear Glass. (560 nm) 37%

    (Note that the QE values above are for the sensor alone and do not take into account the transparency of the camera window).

    And is it possible for DiiffractionLimited company to remove the color filter from front of sensor to becone a mono camera? Or my question is far outside of technical aspect ;)

    No it is not possible; it's built into the semiconductor itself. We could only replace the sensor with a monochrome one. We'd also want to replace the chamber window since the one used in the color camera has an IR block.

    Unfortunately ON Semi recently raised the price of the KAF-8300 sensor significantly, so it would be a pricey modification.
