I'm trying to fix an issue with a previously functioning SBIG AFW Filter Wheel with STT-8300 setup. I have given up at this point on using the USB_FW port adaptor with ASCOM driver since both pieces are SBIG so I went ahead and connected them directly.

I tried to go through the AFW setup procedures but cannot get the options in Maxim DL to show what is instructed. Specifically, even after a fresh install of the recently released drivers, there is no DL Imaging + FW option in Maxim DL for me to set up the filter wheel. When I try to use the SBIG Universal options, it does not give me the option for the AFW-16 filter wheel we have, in the camera setup step it does recognize the STT-8300, so I have a functioning connection.

I have done the SBIG driver checker and such as well.

I have already tried a thousand obvious solutions like unplugging, testing cables, etc. Yesterday I finally got it to recognize that there was a filter wheel by connecting directly to the I2C port from the filter wheel, though not the correct filter wheel, but later in the evening it again stopped even doing that.

    Please help.

The STT-8300 was discontinued some years ago because ON Semi stopped making CCD sensors. The STT-8300 uses the old SBIG Universal drivers.

The AFW is a modern product, so its user manual only talks about the new equipment that uses the DL Imaging drivers. The AFW is however compatible with the older cameras. Since the wheel is controlled through the camera, you have to use the older drivers.

Simple solution: Use the SBIG Universal filter wheel driver.

Okay, so do I need to explicitly switch the driver its using to a specific older one or should selecting the SBIG Universal filter from the options work properly? So far, when I select that option it does not load properly in DL Maxim, it presents with Error (6). I am able to connect with the specific SBIG FW options within the Filter Setup menus but the AFW isn't an option

I have to assume then that this was why the existing setup relied on the USB_FW adaptor and the ASCOM driver. Do you have any ideas for how to get that working correctly again?

Okay I've had to dredge up some memories. The STT camera was discontinued in 2017, and the AFW series was designed in 2021. The two have never met in the shop!

The old SBIG filter wheels never had more than 10 slots, and whoever designed the I2C protocol at the time didn't plan ahead for 16-slot filter wheels. In fact it has a hard limit of 15 slots. That means the SBIG Universal Drivers cannot operate a 16-slot filter wheel.

We implemented an "extended I2C protocol" for high slot count wheels, which is supported by all the new cameras (all Aluma series), but SBIG Universal and the old cameras don't understand it. So it can't work. We froze the old hardware and software years ago, and are no able to maintain it. It would likely work with an 8, 10, or 12 slot AFW, but not with a 16 slot unit.

That is why you have the USB-FW adapter. You must use it.

Okay thanks this is super helpful! I have gone ahead and moved things back over to connect through the USB_FW adaptor. I've been searching through everything for the executable to try a fresh reinstall of the USB_FW interface and see if that helps, do you think you could send that executable my way? I just asked on a separate thread right as you sent this response here! So sorry for the duplicate.

I'm working on getting the machine updated so that I can update the ASCOM platform as well in case that helps. I will be pushing for us to move to a newer camera to help make all of this easier but I'm trying to get my students on sky within the week, so for now I'm just going to have to continue to bridge the generational difference as best I can

Hi! So I have tried all of this, as well as trying it now again with a fresh install of all the software we have licensed and followed your instructions to try to initialize the AFW filter wheel in the MaxIm DL 6 Camera Control panel with the ASCOM driver for the USB_FW. The error I still get now is
    ASCOM.SBIG.USB_FW.FilterWheel:
Driver Setup Error: No Filter Wheel was found.
Double check your hardware setup. Please disconnect and verify your virtual slots setup.. Please disconnet and verify your ASCOM Setup and Filter Wheel connection.

When I tried to do this through the ASCOM Device Connection Tester I get the same error as well. The board inside the USB_FW box has three red lights with Power, Mode, and UREG, while USB is not lit. I tried a different USB cable and this did not fix things.

I'm not sure what trouble shooting steps to try next as I have really tried everything I can think of.

Check the Windows Device Manager to see if it is showing up as a COM Port. If you see Unknown Device, then likely the device driver is not installed.
    I'll send a PM with a link.
