Hi, In another thread I noted Colin Haig mentioned that he always disables serial enumeration. That thread was for the AFW filter wheel, but I have the FW7-STX. Should this box in the attached image be unticked for my rig, like the AFW configuration recommendation by Colin? Thanks, Ira
Serial Enumeration should be disabled for all COMx: ports, UNLESS you have an old-fashioned serial mouse attached to it. Serial Enumeration does a test for a serial mouse, and if it receives certain characters, it will automatically add a mouse to your PC, whether it's really a serial mouse or not - eg a GPS will suddenly be perceived as a serial mouse, and then your cursor will jump around the screen and random clicks will occur. You can lose control of the computer. So, you want this off. It has nothing to do with filter wheels unless the FW is controlled by a serial port or control box; it is specific to serial ports and devices that look like serial ports such as FTDIchip USB adapters, focusers, mounts, USB-to-RS232 adapters, and other related devices.
Ira, from your question I'm assuming you are operating the FW7-STX via its serial interface, instead of from an SBIG camera's I2C port?
Thank you, Colin! Doug - yes I believe that is the case. Just to be certain, I will ask Evan and Sam to take an updated picture since we went through a few disassembly / reassembly procedures for this image train with the various past issues. I do recall seeing the serial cable but I've never had the privilege of assembling everything thanks to the fine folks who have done the work out there!
I don't think that is the setup. The cable between camera and filter wheel is a DE9 cable that looks like a serial cable, but is not. It's the SBIG Auxiliary I2C (Inter-Integrated Circuit) cable.
The FW7 has both options. The built-in cable that comes out of the side of the device is an I2C cable. It can only be connected to an SBIG camera. On one side of the wheel there are two DB-9 ports and a bullet connector. One DB-9 is an I2C port for daisy-chaining (e.g. connecting both FW7 and AO-X to the same camera). The other DB-9 is an RS-232 serial port. If you use that option, then you also have to plug a 12V power supply into the bullet connector. (If you use I2C the camera provides the power.)
