   When taking images with the AC4040 in high gain mode the readout value is equivalent to 12 bits But when saving the file the fits header marks the file as 16 bit. Why is this?

   There's no such thing as a 12-bit FITS image. The image will be saved in 16-bit format, but none of the numbers will be higher than 4095.
