Hello! For the first time ever I had a cable wrap around my imaging train - very tightly. As luck would have it it bent the HDMI plug that went into the FW8G to nearly 90 deg - to the point of breaking. Unsurprisingly, the FW8G (connected to my STXL-11002) stopped working. My question is simple, will replacing the broken cable with a new short high speed HDMI cable work properly? Are there any hidden gotchas - eg do I need a special cable from you guys? I have done some basic testing with a new cable. It seems to work - the filter wheel rotates and the guide camera can take pictures (via TheSkyX) BUT I haven't tested it in anger yet (autoguiding under the stars). Thanks in advance for any advice! Kind Regards, Marcus
As long as it is a decent quality cable, it should be fine. Years ago we got a batch of cables that had no outer ground shield (!). Not as advertised. Those didn't work at all. You might want to pop the lid off the wheel and inspect the connector on the board, to make sure it didn't get damaged during the cable wrap.
I would like to see a picture of that. I have had a couple of cable mishaps over the years. I learned the hard way to bundle my cables and tie them off on the camera handles so that if they ever get caught when the mount is slewing, the stress will be on the handle of the camera instead of at the connector. Doing this has saved me at least once. Mike
Thanks for the replies gents! Mike, I do the same, but this cable is for the focuser and has to hang free. I still haven't tested to figure out exactly how it happened. The rotator may have kept rotating in the same direction. I.e. the meridian flip (automatic) was OK (180 deg rotation from initial position) but when I "de-rotated" and parked the mount it may have kept rotating in the same direction ( towards 360 deg) instead of "reversing" (back to initial position).
