Hi, I recently purchased a SBIG STF-8300M CCD Camera. While reading through the manual, I found the repeated warnings on "hot-plugging" the device when in use. Since I understand this is a potentially serious problem if power up and close down procedures are not handled carefully, I want to be proactive about asking questions regarding the issue. First of all, what would hot-plugging cause, are we talking a complete system failure to power-up, or is it issue which resolves itself in the images that the CCD captures? Secondly, does the order of the connecting and disconnecting the USB cable matter relative to the power cable itself? Should it be plugged in and removed before the power cable is inserted and removed? Thanks.
The main area for concern is the I2C port. If you are using that (e.g. for a filter wheel), then plugging and unplugging with the power connected may cause the I2C power fuse to blow. If the fuse were to blow then you would not be able to operate your filter wheel. Since it is a surface mount fuse it can only be serviced by our repair facility. The USB cable is not a concern; you can plug it in with the power on or off.
I assume that cutting power to the camera is not a problem. The only problem is removing the cable to the I2C port when the power is on.
Correct. I also recommend disconnecting the AC power from the brick before plugging/unplugging the DC power cable. There's a small chance you could short 12V to ground, which can potentially cause damage.
