I plugged my st-i guide camera into my second computer assuming I had already set it up. Not so! The camera had not been previously used on the computer and as the manual says

Before you attach the ST-i to your computer for the first time
you MUST install the software as described below.

So through carelessness I can't set it up properly.
    Is there any workaround?

    Yes.
    Unplug it.
Install SBIG Driver Checker. Update Drivers. Quit.
    Plug it in.
    Launch Driver Checker.
Firmware Tab - Get Firmware version from Camera. If it succeeds, you are good.

    If it fails:
    Quit Driver Checker.
    Unplug camera.
    Launch Windows Device Manager.
    View ... Show hidden devices
    Delete the Unknown device(s).
    Go back to the top.

Note that Show hidden devices may not be available, it depends on what OS you have. You will need to google how to enable it - there is an environment setting.
