I am thinking about getting a standard cover (without guide chip) for my FW8G-STXL to allow me to get the proper back focus with my Tele-Vue NP101-is / LCL1069 flattener. If I decide to do this, are there any special precautions that I need to make when switching the filter wheel covers ? What about when I am connecting the camera to Maxim DL ? Do I just leave the Dual Chip box un-checked ?

It's pretty simple. Shut everything down. Disconnect the AC power cords first! Be safe!c
Then wait a minute or two for the power supplies to discharge.
Then you can disconnect the Remote Guide Head cable from the top section, and carry on from there.

Just take care you don't damage anything (mechanically or electro-statically, or electrically).
And don't get stuff (fingerprints, dirt, paint flakes,... dust) on the filters.
It's a good idea to put the old self-guiding cover in an anti-static bag, with the RGH cable too so you will find it when you want to go back.

Be mindful of the instructions for removing the pieces.
