I am trying to connect to a computer with an ST-402 seeing monitor. I am running a USB to cat 5 converter and back to USB to my main computer and I am not even seeing the camera pop up in my USB devices. However, when I connect a laptop to the camera directly I am receiving a USB Device Not Recognized Error 43 on Windows. I have used the latest drivers downloaded from the internet and followed the manual to a tee so I am unsure as to where to go from here. Does anyone have a fix?

    Thanks

What operating system are you running?
    e.g. Windows 10 32-bit Pro 21 H2? Windows 11 22H2 ?

To get this running, you need to start simple, before adding USB extenders/hubs etc., get Windows to recognize the device.

    Try this:
    1. Disconnect the device from the computer.
    2. Launch the SBIG Driver Checker and [Remove] the device drivers.
    3. Launch Device Manager. View... Show Hidden Devices.
    4. In Device Manager, Remove any devices flagged as Unknown Device; remove SBIG ST Camera without Firmware, SBIG USB Camera, and any other SBIG drivers.
    5. Reboot the PC.

    6. Get the correct software:
When you say you "downloaded the latest drivers from the internet", you should be getting them from here:
    https://diffractionlimited.com/legacy-product-support/

    You'll want the following:
    SBIG Driver Checker 4.05:
    https://cdn.diffractionlimited.com/downloads/SetupDriverChecker64.exe

    CCDOps 5.66:
    https://cdn.diffractionlimited.com/downloads/InstOps.exe

    Seeing Monitor Software:
    https://cdn.diffractionlimited.com/downloads/sbig/seeing_monitor_sql.exe

If you have the WRONG or OBSOLETE versions then this may cause problems.
You will need to uninstall the wrong software and reboot the PC.

    7. DO NOT INSTALL ANY SOFTWARE with Run as Administrator.
    8. Install SBIG Driver Checker 4.05
    9. Run Driver Checker.
    10. [Update] and it will go through the process of installing the drivers.
You should see sbigudrv.dll 5.1.1.0 in the list when it is done.
    Exit out of the software.

    11. Launch Device Manager
    12. Find a known-good USB cable that is fairly short, like 6 feet (2m), and connect it from the ST-402 to the back of the PC.
It is a USB 2.0 connection, compatible with USB 1.1
    13. Power on the ST-402.
Windows should recognize the device, and it should show up in the Device Manager correctly.
It will go through 2 phases of detection. You will hear the USB boop-beep; beep-boop; boop-beep tones.

If this fails, then you probably have:
    (a) a bad install that will need you to manually clean up the mess. e.g. uninstall the software, and then manually remove all remnants of the SBIG software and drivers
    e.g. from C:\Program Files (x86)\SBIG
    e.g. from C:\Windows\System32\drivers
    sbig?cam.hex files; sbigfga.bin; sbigu64.sys

    (b) a bad USB cable or port
    (c) a defective/failed camera.

If the camera shows up, then move on.

    13. Launch CCDOps.
It should recognize the camera. You can get Info on the camera, and it should show an ST-402E or similar.
    Exit.

    14. Install and configure the Seeing monitor software.
    Verify this works.

15 . Try setting up your USB hubs/extenders. I've had limited success with these things - the ICRON Ranger series are about the best out there, and they aren't perfect.
Once they are properly recognized, then install a simple device like a memory stick or keyboard or mouse on the extender to make sure it actually works.
Then move on to plugging in the camera.

    Good luck!

    Good afternoon,

Thanks for such a thorough response. I went ahead and followed your steps up until step 13 where I powered on the ST-402 after connecting it via a functioning usb cable. Once I do this I am back to my original problem where windows does not recognize the device. This leads me to believe that the device itself may be faulty at this point. Do you have any other comments, recommendations or suggestions?

    Thanks,

    Colt

This is pretty old hardware and we can't repair or support it anymore.

I'll ask again, what Operating System are you using?
What error do you get in Device Manager? How about a screen shot?

My mistake not mentioning the operating software. I included a screenshot of the current windows 10 version I am running. I am receiving an error 43 from device manager. I am currently away from the camera so I am unable to take a screenshot for you. It just has a popup in the bottom right saying that the USB Device is Not Recognized when I connect and when I look in device manager it shows and unknown device is connected.

I posted your answer to these questions in my last reply. Were you able to figure anything out?

    Thanks,

    Hello,
I have a SBIB Seeing Monitor v1 with the ST-402 camera. When I came back from vacation I found the Seeing Monitor was no longer connected through the USB. After looking inside the red led was no longer on. I checked power and the voltages on the breakout pad all looked normal. Under windows 10 I removed all drivers and .dlls. Download v4050 of the driver checker and reinstalled all the drivers. I did this on two computers. When plugging in the usb comm ports in the device manager didn't see any changes. no comm port assigned. I did try a firmware report but it reported back that there was no connection.
Are there any test points on the camera board beside the voltage pad that I can test? Is there a ethernet test I can do to see if the camera is working?
    Thanks
    Peter

We don't have any troubleshooting information for these - it's likely over 20 years old.
If your unit has an ICRON Ranger device, that's a USB extender that converts to CAT5/CAT6 cable - NOT ETHERNET!
You could try connecting a PC USB port to the onboard ST-402ME USB port, and see if device manager can find it.

I'm sorry I lead you astray. I have been running the Seeing Monitor for three years with no problems over USB. So the device manager can not see it when it's plugged in. I just thought the Ethernet connector was just that and not a converter.
    My mistake
