    Dear DL Team,

I recently bought a second-hand STX16803 with FW-7. The camera works well in terms of image acquisition and download.
There is one thing that worries me a bit: I can hear a quite "strong" noise coming from the heart of the camera. I upload with this message a very short video where this noise can be heard (with fan off). I have used other STX16803 in the past and I don't recall there was that noise.

Is this noise characteristic of something in particular or it can be anything?

    Best regards,

    Simon

    That seems a bit unusual.
Can you provide the serial number of the camera and filter wheel?
Was the cooler on or off?
Are you using the original SBIG power supply? Is it plugged directly into the camera?
Is anything attached to the camera? e.g FW7-STX, STX-Guider, AO-X when you did the video?

Once we have the details, we may have some ideas.
e.g. it could be an internal power supply component such as an inductor, or shutter motor, filter wheel motor, or some other item.

    Hello Colin,

    STX serial is X17120008
    FW7 serial is FWX171213

It was on (I'm using Prism and there is no obvious way to shut down the cooling, I should try another software)

Yes that is the original power supply and it is directly plugged in the camera (using the 4-pin to 6-pin adapting cable)

Yes the FW7, but I disconnected the I2C connection cable for the test.

    Hope this helps,

Thanks a lot for your kind help,

    Simon

Ok, likely it is the normal hum associated with the shutter motor being held in position, and nothing to worry about.
You might want to check if you have the current firmware in the camera.
    Quit all other programs.
    Launch SBIG Driver Checker.
Check that it is version 4.05 by clicking [About/Help].

If you need the latest released version, you can get the update here:
    https://diffractionlimited.com/legacy-product-support/

Go to the Firmware tab. Click [Get Firmware Version from Camera].

You may wish to update the camera firmware.

As far as software goes, CCDOps is available at no charge on the above page, but it is no longer supported.
We recommend MaxIm DL Pro, and if you need advanced sequencing, there are options like DC3 Dream's ACP Expert.

You can get a Free Trial for 30 days here:

    Enjoy your new-to-you camera.

Ah ok this would explain then why the hum "stops" when taking a picture, and starts again when the exposure is over?

Yes I have the 4.05 nothing to update on that side.

I'll check the difference between MaximDL Pro and the current software I use.

    Sure I will :)

Thanks again and greetings from Switzerland,

    Simon

    Correct.
Check the camera firmware, as there may be an update that changes this behaviour.

Just did, there was indeed one file that had to be updated. It turned out that the hum is indeed modified: it got higher in frequency. Is that expected?

What version was it at before? 2.53? It will have a bit of hum with 2.54. There are no other updates for those cameras of that vintage.

Yes that was 2.53, now 2.54.

And indeed higher-pitched hum in 2.54 compared to 2.53. As soon as this is not a sign that there is a potentiel problem (as you said already), then it is all fine :)

When the fan is running, I'm pretty sure you won't notice it. :D
