I've been told that the ST7-8-10 series usb cable is the same as common printer cables.
I need a long usb cable so is it true? They look the same to me.
    Thanks,
    Bob

Maximum USB cable length is 5 meters, or 16' 5". If you want to go further you will need an active extender cable (with built-in hub). Or a hub.

I have used both 62' long USB active cable extender cable as well as a 32' USB active cable with male and female standard USB on each end. Both work fine on my STL 6303e camera even when used with the slave autoguider camera. I have used in below freezing conditions as well as over 100 degrees F with no problems, reduction in download speed, etc. The longer cable has an option to plug in a power source if you need a bit of extra power....but with my camera and the slave camera attached I don't have to use it. Normal USB cable without active ability is only good for about 15' cable length.
